The Friendship Challenge

On Sunday 27th January, the full Border sides, dressed in their finest travelled to Port Alfred to take on Eastern Province in the annual Friendship Challenge hosted by Kowie Bowling Club.

Border Bowls at The Friendship Challenge Kowie Bowling Club

The day is organised by the Eastern Cape Bowling Association and is essentially a practice for both the Border and EP sides. However, make no mistake, no quarter is asked, and certainly none given. There has always been a healthy rivalry between Border and their neighbouring cousins to the west.

The games on the day are played in exactly the same format as played at the BSA Inter Districts. So it gives the new players an early inkling into what the level of competiton will be when the go away.

Special thanks go to Judy Alexander and all the members of Kowie for their efforts to make the day a success.

There are three trophies up for grabs, the winning ladies team, men’s team and the overall team winners. This year, all the trophies went west of the Fish River with the EP team snatching a clean sweep. Congratulations to them all.

The only Border side to win their fixture was the Border Bowls Men’s B side, who had a stunning day winning losing only one of their games by a single shot.

Once again, thank you to Kowie for the ledgendary hospitality, Rob Forbes as President ECBA and to the EP teams for a worthwhile day.
